Some Days Are Diamonds

There was a song by John Denver that was popular when I was a kid, "Some Days Are Diamonds, Some Days Are Stones". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEL-ucOsbgA If you have heard of it then you know what it means and can relate. (It also means that you are getting on in years, like myself!) If you haven't heard of it, then allow me to explain. Basically it means that you have some good days and some days that just plain suck.
The fact that I haven't been on here for almost a week should let you know that some of the past days have been stones.
However, as with most things, there have been moments that have shone through the bad times. Not quite like a diamond (maybe more like Cubic Zirconia). Mostly it is the antics of our new puppy that has kept my humor up. There is nothing like watching a baby animal of any kind, especially a new pet in the house, to bring a smile to your face when it explores it's environment and the inhabitants it discovers.
The funniest thing she does is when she greets the cat and our other dog. She just loves them to death and, unfortunately, that is what the cat thinks is about to occur when the pup comes running up to him and slobbers a welcome all over him. Winky (our cat) will not defend himself against the puppy but, instead, makes these weird sounds like he is in pain and angry at the same time. Winky will tolerate the puppy (Missy) for a short period of time and then he'll find some place to hide. We won't see him again until he is ready to go out or gets hungry.
I have made several videos and umpteen photos of our two dogs and cat. Like the pictures we all take of our children and grandchildren, most are for our own delight and strangers would only feign interest. And so, we tend to keep these items for our own enjoyment. That's okay because I will enjoy them and not be bothered by anyone else's opinion. These are the children that inhabit my home now and are the source of both frustration and delight. (Much like my two sons in earlier times.)
These babies, however, are providing a whole new set of challenges. Whenever my kids did a bad job (as it was called in our family), it would mean a diaper change. Now, I have to worry about stepping in it, like I did the other day while looking for a book. Eeeeww! Not a "diamond" moment for sure!
Teething with my children meant teething rings that we kept in the freezer. Now, I have to worry about anything I leave in the floor becoming a shredded mess. The other day, I was separating clothes to wash and found my underwear in the living room under the coffee table. Not good. At least I found them while they were still wearable. My book marker was a different story. The tassel was just bits of colored thread and the top half of the paper book marker was just gone.
That's okay because Missy is so small that she is practically at our mercy. We can sling her around like a stuffed toy and usually we do. I'll just be glad when she gets past the stage where she has to chew everything. She has a hundred tiny and viciously sharp piranha teeth and she doesn't mind using them!
I hope you enjoy today's line up...

JOKE OF THE DAY

Monkeys, Dogs and Leopards
Due to his owner's negligence, a dog became lost in the deepest jungles of Africa.
Wandering around, the poor dog notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch.
Just then, the dog noticed some bones laying on the ground close by.
The dog immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching leopard.
Just as the jungle cat is about to leap, the dog loudly says, "My, that was one delicious leopard!
I wonder if there are any more around here?"
Hearing this, the leopard slinks away.
"That was too close," thought the leopard, "that dog nearly had me."
Meanwhile, a mischievous monkey had observed the entire scene, and decided to cause trouble for the dog, while getting on the good side of the leopard as well.
The monkey dashed off after the leopard, to tell him what truly happened.
The dog saw the monkey dash off, and suspiciously tailed him from behind.
He overhears the monkey spilling the beans, and quickly decides on a course of action, racing back to the pile of bones.
At the same time, the leopard has decided to take care of the dog once and for all.
The monkey hops on the leopard's back, to watch the demise of the doomed dog.
As the leopard approaches, he can hear the dog talking to himself:
"Where's that lazy monkey? I sent him off half an hour ago for another leopard, and he's still not back!"

To love a person is to learn the song that is in their heart,
and to sing it to them when they have forgotten.

Late one Sunday night...

This post is a little late in coming but this is Sunday and I had to get out of the house for a little while. If for nothing else than to remind myself that there is an outside world. Also, my husband likes to take me places so he can prove that I AM NOT a figment of his imagination.
I watched a movie yesterday that I had never heard of, "The Human Stain" with Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman. While I wasn't really impressed by the movie, I was, as always, impressed with Nicole Kidman.
I wasn't always a fan of hers. In fact, there was a time when I did not even LIKE her. That was back in the days of my youth where the tabloids ruled. I don't remember exactly what I read about her that caused me to dislike her but I know it was something about her personal life. Since then I have learned that nobody in the acting profession, or any profession, should have their TALENT obscured by their shenanigans.
There are plenty of actors and actresses and singers whose behavior leaves a lot to be desired.
Still, most of the first movies I was aware of that starred Ms. Kidman were simply too racy for my tastes. My, that woman sure likes to take off her clothes in front of the camera!
I am mostly a horror movie buff. Both the gory kind and the psychological kind. When I saw Nicole Kidman in "The Others" in 2001, I thought she had done a good job and it was a good movie (very unexpected ending, if you haven't seen it, try it).  But that was as far as my opinion improved.
It wasn't until I watched "The Stepford Wives" (2004 remake of the 1975 movie) that I realized what a wonderful performer she could be. Check for yourself by watching the scene at the start of the movie when she gets fired. The range of emotion that she portrays without even speaking is amazing. Here is a clip but it doesn't show the whole scene http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi318439705/
Since that movie, I have gone back and watched some of her earlier movies and readjusted my first evaluation of her and her talents. She still had some films that were too racy for my tastes ("Eyes Wide Shut"), but she shone in them all.
I guess this was a lesson in keeping an open mind and learning how and when to let the judgements of others determine your own beliefs.
 Until tomorrow...

JOKE OF THE DAY
An old, blind cowboy wanders into an all-girl biker bar by mistake.
He finds his way to a bar stool and orders a shot of Jack Daniels.
After sitting there for a while, he yells to the bartender, "Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?"

The bar immediately falls absolutely silent.

In a very deep, husky voice, the woman next to him says,
"Before you tell that joke, Cowboy, I think it is only fair, given that you are blind, that you should know five things:

1. The bartender is a blonde girl with a baseball bat.

2. The bouncer is a blonde girl.

3. I'm a 6-foot tall, 175-pound blonde woman with a black belt in karate.

4. The woman sitting next to me is blonde and a professional weight lifter.

5. The lady to your right is blonde and a professional wrestler.

Now, think about it seriously, Cowboy. Do you still wanna tell that blonde joke?"

The blind cowboy thinks for a second, shakes his head and mutters, "No...not if I'm gonna have to explain it five times."
from an email: thanks, Debbie

QUOTE OF THE DAY
Having a million friends is not a miracle...
a miracle is having a friend who'll stand by you
when millions are against you.

TIP OF THE DAY
The next time you need to paint anything with a paintbrush try this tip. Take a plastic coffee can lid, cut a slot in the center large enough to allow you to slip it down the handle to the bristles of the brush. This will insure that you go no farther than the lid in the paint and will catch any drips when you paint. After you are finished painting, cut a small section of the lid with the paint to use to match colors.

3rd one is the charm

While I am a full time factory worker, I am temporarily off work due to some medical stuff that is boring and nothing serious. Soon, I'll be back to work and rolling in the dough once more! (Not!) However, the time without a steady paycheck has caused financial strain, to say the least. I feel a deep kinship and sympathy for all the out of work people in the US today, the world over, in fact.
There are so many ways for people to save money. You can cut back on eating out or stop altogether . You can rent out extra bedrooms. You can look into recycling anything that is lying around, whether for money or for practical use. Also, you can sell things you no longer need or want on sites like eBay or Craig's list.
Me, I have to be more creative (and, yes, more lazy) than that and look into non-conventional ways to make money, not just save it. Being lazy as I am, and  easily distracted, I have taken to clicking on anything I see while surfing to see if I can make a buck or two.
So far, all I have done is filled up my inbox with hundreds of emails that fall into one of two categories; coupons to save money or surveys to make money. I'll tell you right now, I am having better luck with the coupons. Unless you have a lot of time to kill and plan to get a lot of things on the internet anyway (like car insurance or DVD's or a credit card), I suggest you forget about surveys. Unless you want to make fifty cents so you can get a membership in a company that will reimburse your online shipping for a monthly fee of 19.99.
Yesterday, I did come across a very interesting site, thanks to an app I have on my iPhone. (It's called 100 ways to make $100, in case you want to add it to YOUR iPhone, and yes, it was free). The site is http://fiverr.com/  and it is CRAZY!! Basically, you join, post whatever you are willing to do for five dollars, people contact you for these "gigs", as they are called on the site, and you get $4, fiverr gets $1.
People are on here offering everything from computer based services, advertising your company or product in many ways, giving lessons using Skype, and composing songs and poems. One man offered his big, hairy beer belly for advertising! He was on David Letterman. So, not only can you make money but you can become famous (for fifteen minutes, anyway).
You can also ask for someone to fulfill a "gig" for you. Want somebody to pretend to be your facebook giirlfriend in order to make an old girlfriend jealous? They're on here. Looking for a person to paint their lips like a bumblebee? Done. How about your image or anyone else's as a anime? You got it.
There are many people to redo pictures using Photoshop and many to help with technical problems you may have.
The question now is, what can, or am I willing to do, for five dollars? Hmmm...
Until tomorrow..

JOKE OF THE DAY
Four Fathers
Four expectant fathers were in a Minneapolis hospital waiting room while their wives were in labor. The nurse arrived and proudly announced to the first man, "Congratulations, sir. You're the father of twins!"

"What a coincidence! I work for the Minnesota Twins Baseball team!"

Later the nurse returned and congratulated the second father on the birth of his triplets.

"Wow! That's incredible! I work for the 3M Corporation."

An hour later, the nurse returned to congratulate the third man on the birth of his quadruplets. Stunned, he barely could reply, "I don't believe it! I work for the Four Seasons Hotel!"

After this, everyone turned to the fourth guy who had just fainted. The nurse rushed to his side. As he slowly gained consciousness, they could hear him mutter over and over, "I should never have taken that job at 7-Eleven. I should never have taken that job at 7-Eleven. I should never have taken that job....

TIP OF THE DAY
If your house is the kind that doesn't eat a lot of eggs and you find yourself throwing out the last one or two, this is a good tip for you. Try FREEZING the leftover eggs. This is especially good around Easter time when the price of eggs is very low.  You take a regular ice tray and crack the eggs directly into each space. Once frozen, pop them out of the tray and put into heavy duty freezer bags. Take out only what you need and leave the rest in the freezer for later use.
If you are a wine drinker, this works for leftover wine. Just use a cube for your next stew or soup.

TRIVIA OF THE DAY
Today is Nanakusa (Seven Herbs Festival) in Japan. It is the long-standing Japanese custom of eating seven-herb rice porridge on January 7 (Jinjitsu). The nanakusa are seven edible wild herbs of spring. Traditionally they are: water dropwort, sheperd's purse, cudweed, chickweed, nipplewort, turnip and radish. This is supposed to bring longevity and health.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanakusa-no-sekku

2nd Post--Full Steam Ahead!!

Let me back up a step and tell you a little bit about me before I go getting all crazy and throwing stuff at you.
I was born up north, Chicago to be exact. We lived there and in Chicago Heights and Sauk Village. I am the third child out of eight (five girls and three boys, one whom died in infancy right before my birth).
We moved to rural Mississippi in 1974. I've been here ever since even though my siblings have danced around the map a little. I am content to stay near my parents. It's NOT the typical "Let's move into Ma and Pa's back yard" kind of near the parents, though. I likes me space, in that regard.
I am free, white and over twenty-five (way over), as they say 'round these parts. That sounds racist and probably is in some way but is not meant to be on my part.
I am married for the third and last time, God willing, to my soul mate, Alan. I have two boys, Jonathan and Brandon who are in their early twenties. Jonathan is studying to be a social worker, following in his Aunt's footsteps. Brandon is in the Marines and serving our country over seas in Okinawa, Japan. I am proud of both of them.
It's funny they should go the way they are since I started doing what each of them ARE doing and never finished. I went to college for two years but didn't get a degree in anything and I was in ROTC while in college.  That's Reserved Officer Training Corp for anyone not familiar with the term.
I am a factory worker in a plant that makes elevators. NOT a glamorous job or (in my position) one that requires any education beyond a high school diploma. It does have it's ups and downs. Saw that one coming from a mile away, din't ya?
I don't really want to work there until retirement age but don't know what I want to be "when I grow up". So, for the moment anyway, I am there and there I'll be.
I like reading, scrapbooking, flower gardening (even though my green thumb is more like a brown thumb), facebook, farmville on facebook, and some other stuff, too, but I forget what it is at the moment...I'll have to get back to you on that.
I have wanted to start a blog for a long time. I don't know why, maybe it'll come to me. I am may get bored with this soon and drop it. I may get discouraged if no one follows my posts. I do want to keep it fresh and keep it interesting to many people. Mostly, I would like to bring a smile to your face at least once. If I have done that, then I can say "job well done".
 Until tomorrow....

January 5, 2012

This is my maiden voyage into the land of blogging. My one and only goal is to entertain. There will be jokes, tips, tricks, recipes, quotes, trivia and gross things that I like to share just because I can. My sense of humor may make you laugh, sigh or shake your head and wonder why. If you are in the latter category, be assured you are not alone. BUT ... enough about me...let me start the sharing.

JOKE OF THE DAY
Tomato garden
An old Italian man lived alone in the country. He wanted to dig his tomato garden but it was very hard work as the ground was hard. His only son, Vincenzo, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament.
Dear Vincenzo,
I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won't be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I am getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. If you were here, my troubles would be over. I know you would dig the garden for me.
Love, Papa
A few days later he received a letter from his son.
Dear Papa, I'd do anything for you Papa, except dig up that garden. That's where I buried the bodies.
Love, Vinnie
At 4 am the next morning, FBI and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left.
The same day the old man received another letter from his son.
Dear Papa, Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That's the best I could do under the circumstances.
Love, Vinnie

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Your life and mine shall be valued not by what we take... but by what we give." -Edgar Allen Founder, Easter Seals

TIP OF THE DAY
If you don't already know this is a good emergency tip and a way to recycle and get in on the whole "green" thing, too.  You can cut the neck off of a 20 oz. or 2 lt. plastic bottle to make a funnel that will fit in practically any space since the plastic is flexible and the length is determined by your cut.

TRIVIA OF THE DAY
Just in case you didn't already feel like an underachiever, this is an entry in the Ripley's Believe It Or Not published in 1985.
Judge George Green (1817-1880) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa was a Lawyer, Geologist, Teacher, Legislator, Newspaper Publisher, Supreme Court Justice,  Mayor, Hotel Owner, Nursery Owner, Steamboat Builder and President of 6 banks, 17 companies, 10 railroads and 3 colleges!

GROSS ITEM OF THE DAY
Contrary to what I believed for most of my life, your fingernails and toenails DO NOT continue to grow after you are dead. In fact, the skin around our nails draws up due to the regular processes of the decaying of our bodies. This makes it appear as if the nails are longer when, in fact, they are not.

SITE OF THE DAY
I am sure that many of you are aware of this site. As I am just starting this project, I hope that I will be excused from starting with the basics. Anyway, if you haven't  already tried out this site, give it a go. I think it was my husband who first told me to try Stumble Upon. I don't go there often, but that is due to lack of time, not lack of interest. It is a site that is built all around YOU. What YOU like and want to see. All in one place and all set according to YOUR specifications. Check it out and start stumbling onto what YOU want from the web.
